About

The rainbow flag as it is now is undoubtedly the most recognisable Queer Pride symbol in existence. It was designed in 1978 by American artist Gilbert Baker and featured eight stripes, with each colour having a particular meaning.

After the assassination of US out-gay politician Harvey Milk in late 1978, demand for the rainbow flag greatly increased. To meet the demands, flag-makers began issuing a standard seven-colour rainbow version of the flag (red, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet), and Gilbert Baker himself began to issue the flag a seven-stripe version due to a lack of hot-pink fabric.

In 2017, not long before his death, Gilbert Baker updated the rainbow flag, taking the original eight-stripe design and adding a ninth, lavender stripe to represent diversity.
