After the assassination of out-gay US politician Harvey Milk in 1978, demand for Gilbert Baker’s original rainbow flag increased. To keep up with the demand, flag suppliers began to issue standard, seven-stripe rainbow flags (red, yellow, orange, green, blue, indigo, violet) in their place, and Gilbert Baker himself began to make the flags without the hot pink stripe due to an unavailability of hot pink fabric.
In 1979, the organisers of the San Francisco Pride Parade made another change to the rainbow flag, where it became the version best known to everyone now. Wanting to use decorate the parade route with half the flag on each side, they dropped the turquoise stripe, and used the six-striped version everyone is most familiar with.
Gilbert himself would redesign the flag by adding a ninth stripe to the original eight-stripe version.
