The rainbow flag is easily the most recognisable of all the Queer Pride flags in existence. It was originally designed in by Gilbert Baker in 1978, with eight stripes. As the rainbow flag became more and more popular, a shortage of the necessary hot pink fabric resulted in a seven-striped version with the hot pink removed.
In 2017, a variant with two added stripes (black and brown) became popular, which then involved into the “Progress Flag“. Gilbert Baker himself updated the Rainbow Flag in 2017, by adding a lavender coloured stripe to the original, eight-stripe design.
